"Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." — Matthew 22:21
Every week at Seedandsoulful, we take an honest look at what's happening in our culture and political landscape — and we bring it back to the only source of truth that never changes: God's Word. Welcome to "In The World, Not Of It" — your weekly Christian worldview column. 🙏✝️
What's Happening in the World
Politics has never been more polarizing. Social media feeds are flooded with outrage, division, and competing narratives. Christians are being pulled in every direction — pressured to pick a political team, stay silent, or compromise their values to fit in. The question many believers are wrestling with today is: How do I engage in politics without losing my faith, my peace, or my witness?
What the World Says
Culture tells us that our political identity defines us. It says you must be fully committed to one side, that silence is complicity, and that winning the argument matters more than loving your neighbor. Social media amplifies the loudest, most extreme voices — and it can feel like there's no room for nuance, grace, or God in the conversation.
What God's Word Says
Scripture gives us a clear and balanced framework for engaging with government and politics:
📖 Romans 13:1 — "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." God is sovereign over every government and every leader — nothing surprises Him.
📖 Matthew 22:21 — "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." Jesus acknowledged earthly authority while making clear that our ultimate allegiance belongs to God alone.
📖 1 Timothy 2:1-2 — "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority." Our first political act as Christians is prayer — not protest, not outrage.
📖 Micah 6:8 — "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Justice, mercy, and humility — not party loyalty — are God's standard for how we engage.
📖 John 17:15-16 — "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." We are called to be present in the world — including its politics — but not shaped by it.
How to Navigate It
Here are 5 practical, faith-grounded ways to engage in today's political climate as a Bible-believing Christian:
- Pray first, post second. Before you share that article or fire off a comment, pray. Ask God for wisdom, discernment, and a spirit of grace.
- Let Scripture — not your party — shape your values. Don't read the Bible through a political lens. Read politics through a biblical lens.
- Protect your witness. How you engage matters as much as what you believe. A harsh, divisive tone can close doors that the Gospel needs open.
- Vote your conscience, not your tribe. Research candidates and policies through the lens of biblical values — life, justice, truth, and human dignity.
- Remember where your citizenship truly lies. "But our citizenship is in heaven." (Philippians 3:20) No election, no policy, no president changes that.
A Closing Prayer
Lord, in a world full of noise, division, and fear — help us to be people of peace, truth, and grace. Give us wisdom to engage in the political arena without losing our witness. Remind us that You are sovereign over every nation and every leader. May we be salt and light in every conversation, every vote, and every interaction. In Jesus' name, Amen. 🙏
